Our history: 1958-1994
The following is a History of Hazel Creek Mill as written by Mrs. Edith Nash in 1995. Edith was the wife of Robert Nash. Robert and Edith are the last and current owners of the Mill and Shoals Property.
In 1958, G. Pierce Short purchased 12.5 acres which included the “Mill Shoals’ from Homer Ansley for $3,300. W.A. Chandler ran the “Mill” for about ten (10) years. There was still a limited demand for corn meal and hammer meal for livestock feed in the late sixties when Homer Ansley returned to operate the “Mill” for Mr. Short. In the seventies, the “Mill” operated only two or three days a week. It ceased operation in the mid-seventies.
The “Mill” has been a favorite spot for photographers and artist for many years. Calendars, Books, and prints are published with photographs of the “Mill” dressed in splendor from all seasons of the year. North Georgia Tech’s photographers’ workshop use the “Mill” for one of its on-site classes. Artist from all over have captured the beauty of the “Mill” and “Mill Shoals” on canvas. In addition, the art students from Gainesville College, Piedmont College, Tallulah Falls College, and area High Schools are fascinated with the effect of sunlight and shadows on their finished works. Hardly a day goes by without someone stopping on the side of the road to take pictures.
