Our history: 1947-1958

The following is a History of Hazel Creek Mill as written by Mrs. Edith Nash in 1995. Edith was the wife of Robert Nash. Robert and Edith are the last and current owners of the Mill and Shoals Property.

In 1947, Homer Ansley and Floyd Sellers took over the “Mill”. They paid $2,300 for 29 acres which included the “Mill Shoals”. Floyd quit after little over a year. Hamp Ansley, Homer’s Father, helped him run the “Mill”. Homer says “in the “Mill’s” heyday, it made him a good living, averaging about seventy-five bushels of meal per week”. His toll was 1/8 of what was ground. He had a meal route to the area Grocery stores where he sold his corn meal. He says he remembers the mule-drawn wagon being lined up five and six deep waiting to have the corn ground. When asked if any corn was ground for corn mush, Homer says “We never ask what folks were going to do with their meal”. Everybody knew about moonshine but nobody talked about it.
